Morning, all!

Running late due to computer problems this morning. Fine Wednesday puzzle, although a little early for St. Patrick's Day... Seriously, nice theme and no issues at all with the fill.

Have a great one!

Good Morning MelissaBee and friends. I loved this "Wearing O' the Green" puzzle.

Hand up for thinking of Peel before RIND.

I also tried Glued instead of CLUNG for Stuck (to).

OH, SO appeared recently, so I knew that was the answer to the clue for Very.

Nice shout-out to our friend, Tinbini, with NEAT!

Hello, all!

Have been holed up with taxes for several days, so have missed out on puzzles and blog! Back killing me, too.

Fun puzzle! Thanks Gerry and mb!

Love PST!

Hope all are well!

Good morning!

Pretty easy for a Wednesday, but had some nice fill. We've been seeing OHSO oh so often.

Melissa, enjoyed your cats monopolizing STUFF. At the moment my nemesis is actually being good, asleep atop my printer.

Off to do taxes... Later.

Good morning everyone,

Off to the races so I'll be brief....

Enjoyed the puzzle a lot. Felt it was just right for the Wed challenge.

25A Nice shout out to Tin

45a Buster/NARC clever.

Heading to the Chiro & then the Cardio. Will read comment when I get back.

Good morning, folks. Thank you, Gerry Wildenberg, for a fine Wednesday puzzle. Thank you, Melissa Bee, for the very good review.

Glanced around the clues and spotted Fitzgerald, so I wrote in F SCOTT for 51D. That was my start. Spread from there.

Bounced around the grid entering a word here and there. THE COLOR OF MONEY surfaced first.

I also had GLUED for 30D. Fixed that after NARC and PUTTING SURFACE to CLUNG. My only ink blot.

Did not know VEDA. Perped it.

I remembered NORMA for Marilyn for 31D.

LONG U was clever. Fooled me for a while.

That's it for me. Off to my eye doctor later for a check up. Then Chinese food tonight. Chinatown. I am not a big fan of Chinese food, but the group I am with is going there, so be it.

See you tomorrow.

Good Morning Everybody! Great puzzle. I'm certainly looking forward to the GREEN of spring, and seeing lots of geese and ducks like the one Melissa linked.

Great clues and a nice shout out to our very own "Otis" (neighbor of Opie?) I liked:

- 25A: In a glass by itself: NEAT
- 45A: Buster? Narc

That dang LONG U fooled me! "What is LONGU?" I also got stumped on NABOBS.

My favorite clue: THE COLOR OF MONEY. I'll take it!

Have a great day everybody.

Mari said...

Abejo,

I haven't been to Chinatown in years. I enjoy Chinese food, and it's probably just the atmosphere but to me the food always tastes a little better in Chinatown.

Have a good time.

Just the right difficulty for a Wednesday. Several unknowns, all covered by perps. For some unknown reason, I put NORMy instead of NORMA (hey its early) but that got fixed easily enough.
Temps heading for the 90s this week. WhooHoo!!!

Good morning melissa, C.C. et al.

Nice write-up. Thanks for linking the cat STUFF. Mine have taken over the electric blanket. I swear, they sneak upstairs and crank up the dial when I'm not looking.

I had a minor nit with the theme. GREEN doesn't equal CONSERVATIONIST, does it? True, a conservationist would use green products, but would you say "Marti is a GREEN, because she recycles?" Also, I think of a VILLAGE GREEN as the town common. So, shouldn't it be Plural GREENS for the clue? The other two are perfectly fine, and I especially liked THE COLOR OF MONEY.

Have a nice Hump Day, everyone!

Good morning all !

Thank you Gerry Wildenberg. I enjoyed the fresh cluing and solid fill. I must admit that I CLUNG on to preSERVATIONIST way too long. That really slowed me down in the NW until I finally just turned on red letter assist. That was my only error, and the puzzle was completed within a couple of minutes after changing to CON.

Melissa, thank you for your write up. Great picture with teal. And i liked the Herb Albert video. His music always seemed to be upbeat. I also enjoyed your cats stuff slide show.

Hi All ~~

Thanks for an enjoyable puzzle, Gerry Wildenberg. A fairly smooth run with just a couple of pauses.

I, too, wasn't sure about IST at the end of 17A - I started with CONSERVATISM, but had to change it for HTTP. I also started with 'College' COMMONS before ECLAT changed that. VEDA was unknown.

~ 39A - STUFF - reminded me of a George Carlin skit.

~ Whenever I fill in OH SO I think of a puzzle from Marti ~ it may have been the first time I had seen it used in a puzzle.

~ I was lucky to know the eight names needed today.

~ Anyone NOT think of Tinbeni with 25A - NEAT? :-)

~ Thanks for a wonderful write-up, Melissa. Loved the pics and links - especially the cats. You're always so informative and you add a nice artistic touch!

We had “Top of the mornin’” recently (I’m a morning person and hate DST) and now GREEN. What is Rich saving for St. Patty’s Day?

Musings
-On “links” golf courses like this one at St. Andrews, it can be hard to tell where the PUTTING SURFACE begins
-My car PURRs so quietly, I had to have my SIL tell me it was still running when we were walking away. It couldn’t have been my bad hearing or forgetfulness or impatience!
-A movie with OPIE on one side of the camera and Tom Hanks on the other has never disappointed me
-Hondo reminded me that Willie Mays was ON DECK during the “shot heard ‘round the world”
-KITS like like this one were a big part of my childhood
-The NHL was tired of “kissing your sister” games and now settles TIES this way
-The bikes my kids and grandkids ride now have strobe lights instead of a BELL
-I asked a young man at the Y about his TATS and if it they might interfere with his future employment. He showed me that they ended precisely two inches above his wrists so he could cover them with shirt sleeves
-I know Tin likes his drinks NEAT but I wonder if he ever adds zest from RIND shavings
-FLO loved FANNY
-Norma was truly a “candle in the wind”
-We had Lobster last night in Omaha. It wasn’t as FRESH as what you NE’s get but man it was great!
-On some recent flights, it looked as if peeps are trying to STOW a steamer trunk
-Easy one - What movie had a VILLAGE GREEN with a clock tower on one side that gets hit by lightning?

Thank you, Gerry Wildenberg for a nice`challenging puzzle. I had some trouble with the first few clues, but they resolved themselves. Thank you, melissa b. for your interesting commentary. I had a little trouble with 'Conservationist', but had fun with 'Stuff', when it was finally revealed.

Veda. archaic form of Sanskrit. (?).

The Vedas are the oldest texts of Sanskrit literature and scriptures of Hinduism. Still very much used in religious ceremonies, even today. The individual verses are called mantras. As a common noun, veda would mean knowledge or wisdom. The precursor or Proto-language of Sanskrit, would be Indo-Aryan ( or Indo-Iranian - ); Prakrit/ Pracrit, Pali is the later, common vernacular and written language of Sanskrit.

Now, I'm off to searching for a deli, for my once a year partaking of a hot corned beef sandwich.

Have a good day, all.

I thought the same thing about CONSERVATIONIST. Found this definition:

13. ( sometimes capital ) concerned with or relating to conservation of the world's natural resources and improvement of the environment: green policies ; the green consumer

and this one:

7. ( sometimes capital ) a person, esp a politician, who supports environmentalist issues (see sense 13)

So, the latter would appear to support CONSERVATIONIST.

Good morning all.

I felt the puzzle was unremarkable; as the meaning is used in AMA pathology wording. 'Unremarkable' simply means nothing special to comment on.
Melissa covered it pretty well. Interesting green theme; only minor misdirections; as in LONG U for mute sound. No lookups, no nits, one small erasure - had 'glued' before CLUNG..

Spitzboov said...

Marti - If one were a member of,say, the Green political party in Germany, who view themselves as conservationists, one might be called a Green. JMHO.

Addendum
-The four Ronnie Howard/Tom Hanks collaborations were Splash, Apollo 13, The Da Vinci Code, and Angels and Demons. Didn’t a lot of you think of the last one vis-à-vis what is going on in Rome today?
-BTW, after looking at my avatar, any guesses on my favorite? ;-)

DNF today. For the life of me I couldn't see how FACE would link up with PUTTING, so SUR never surfaced, along with stuFF, nARC, FAST, FRUItfly or TIEs, the caps indicating what was missing. Not sure why FRUITFLY didn't occur to me, probably just a brain fart.

I almost never eat fast food, and FISH food occurred to me but seemed too farfetched, so I abandoned it. Also am totally unfamiliar with all dishes involving crustaceans, as I hate eating anything with my fingers or requiring that much work to actually get at.

Many others were complete WAGS too, including the LONG U, which made absolutely no sense as I couldn't see how any long vowel would be mute. Only after staring at it here a second time did the penny drop for me.

As an indication of my torpor today, I even managed to screw up the sudoku.

Thanks for the explanations of "Green" as a person. I did know about the green party in Germany, but HG also sent me info on the one in the US. So I'm OK with that one. (Still don't like singular "green" clue for pl. ans. "commons" ....grumble, mumble, grrrr....)

HG @ 9:29, I loved that movie!

Good puzzle today. Conservationist came first and that filled out the top for me. Didn't know eclat or veda and wanted College Commons, but putting surface brought ice up which gave me village and solved the rest. All in all, a fun romp.

Morning, all!

I was ready to give up before starting as I didn't know any answers in the NW block. But as someone here told us, just plug along word by word and see how far you can get. So, I decided to see how many clues I could actually deduce.

I bounced around all over the puzzle after a horizontal pass then a vertical one and ever so slowly, I solved the whole thing!
When I WAGed OPIE for Ronny role, the whole bugaboo area opened up with perps.

Cloudy day here, but it might get to 50°!!!! That should melt some piles of snow!

Have a nice day,

Montana

Felt like a Monday puzzle, I must be getting better at this!

HG, is that movie a trick question? Because the the clock tower & village green appear in part I, II, & III???

Manac, I saw yr post last nite, no fair! It is physically impossible for a dog to flip the bird. I know, because I spent hours looking for a photo to send you back:) I did find some interesting stuff during my search though... I also found this cat & dog contest, I guess the dog won, but I am still impressed with the cat!

Argyle! I do not see you on my friends list at the golf game anymore! did you quit golf? Anyway, they sent me something that might be of interest to all golfers. check this out!

Good morning. Evidently it's almost St Pat's Day. I think we're being led to that conclusion :-) Enjoyed the write up, and especially the cats, MB.

Like Spitz said, nothing unremarkable. But a solid puzzle with a bit of bite that was fun to solve. I normally despise cross referential clues, but common theme clues take on a different dimension that works for me. This was one of those days.

I've also noticed Tin's absence and certainly thought of him with NEAT. It's possible he's romping in Jamaica.

Today is Neil Sadaka's birthday. He put out a lot of unremarkable songs, but did make a noteworthy statement with The Immigrant

-When I was a wee lass we had beauty PARLORs, funeral PARLORs, and ice cream PARLORs in our town. Only the old fashioned people had PARLORs in their homes. These were stiff and gloomy rooms reserved for visiting company and holidays. Otherwise they were unused.
-I've heard and seen COMMON and COMMONS used interchangeably.. Wiki says, "The commons were traditionally defined as the elements of the environment - forests, atmosphere, rivers, fisheries or grazing land - that are shared, used and enjoyed by all." The thesaurus gives green as a synonym for commons, but not vice versa.
-St. Pat's has been celebrated here ever since the first of March. There have been several parades already. With the parades stretched out like that people can watch or participate in several.
-We are having a nice sunny day with temps in the high 40’s. I much prefer the 40s and 50s to the 90’s. Anything over 80, our possibly 85, is not my cup of tea.

-Off to see the Village People! You know where they say it is “fun to stay” ;-)

This Gerry Wildenberg, today's composer, chiming in.

Thanks to Melissa and the many complimentary commentators.

Many of the clues are due to Rick. For example Rick put in: "Accessory on the handlebar" where I had suggested "Who'll ___ the cat?", a reference to a famous folktale.

BTW, I did not intend this as a St. Patrick's Day puzzle. Though I was aware of that possibility, I didn't want to wait that long for publication (this was accepted last August!)

Perfect Wednesday puzzle--not too easy, not too hard. So, many thanks, Gerry! And you too, Melissa, for your always delightful expo.

Liked getting a different clue for OPIE, for a change. Doesn't it seem as though the little dude shows up in almost every puzzle?

Got ANOUK Aimee (unusual first name) but had forgotten that she was in "La Dolce Vita."

I recently encountered NARCS for BUSTERS in another puzzle, so will have to remember this one.

Finally, do any of you remember Spiro Agnew calling the critics of conservatism NATTERING NABOBS OF NEGATIVISM? That fellow sure had a way with alliteration! What ever happened to him?

Great start to what should be a great Wednesday! Have a good one, everybody!

"Emphatic type" for ITAL, great clue! (Gerry or Rich?) Hands up for being tricked by "Mute sound?" I shoulda known better. Yes, nabobs sounds funny; nattering nabobs even funnier. (I see Misty remembered it too.)

Yes, I have a bell on my bike; partly to warn people or say hello and mostly for fun.

Gary, speaking of a car purring, over a year ago we went to downtown Manhattan Beach for lunch. I parked my old Camry on the street at a meter. When I got up from lunch, I patted my pocket. No keys! I didn't see them on the floor. I walked back to the car. There they were, still in the ignition with the windows down and the engine running. (I often leave the windows down and the sunroof cracked open in warm weather.) I had a Mainer friend who used to leave her keys in the ignition. Not me usually but the CRS got me again.

Hola Everyone, I really have a big lump on my forehead from that ever present v-8 can. I had the whole puzzle completed, but knew I had a wrong answer in Longu--Duh!! A Long-U for Mute sound. How could I have been fooled by that clue once again?

Other than that I enjoyed the puzzle and it was about right for a Wednesday. All the greens were fun. Conservationist was one of the last to fall as I had to get more of the perps in to get the entire word. You usually don't see a long one word fill with a theme like this. Truly great.

Hands up, also, for Peel before Rind and Glued before Clung. My eraser did have a bit of a workout before everything was filled in.

The fruit fly was easy as my husband used that wee fly in his science classes to teach genetics. We had an infestation of fruit flies in our kitchen last summer and I had to lure them into a jar with a bit of ripe banana. If you ever need to make a trap I have a great one.

Thanks Melissa B. for the great writeup. I was sure there would be a picture of a Shark's uniform for the word teal. Imagine my surprise when it was only a duck.

On my bike, I headed south to Hermosa Beach, planning to stop for something Greek at Uncle Stavros' Cafe. Alas, they were closed already. So I headed across the street to The Spot, a vegetarian café. I had lentil soup and their 'blue plate special' which was carrots, broccoli, mashed potatoes and a veggie burger smothered with grilled onions and mushrooms. The potatoes were more smashed than mashed. The patty wasn't as juicy as if it had been made with ground beef, but once I got the idea in my head that it wasn't beef, it tasted good on its own merits.

Good Evening All - Busy and tragic day today. Not sure if any of you happened to see on the national news today. There was a shooting near my hometown of Ilion, NY. An old high school classmate and friend of mine owns a barber shop in Mohawk, NY. A gunman came into his stop today and started firing - killing 2 and wounding my friend and another customer. Then went to the nearby town of Herkimer and killed 2 more people at a car wash. He proceeded to a building on Main St. which is where he is currently (supposedly) holed up. The police have not heard from him since 2 p.m. when there were shots fired. I don't know why they don't go in to find out if he is alive or dead. Schools were locked down for miles around these two communities and buildings evacuated. Who would have ever thought such a tragic event could happen so close to home. Asking for prayers for the families who have been devastated today. I have just found out my friend is out of surgery and will recover, however, the other victim is in critical condition.
Thank you.

Annie, yes I read about the tragic shooting on my homepage, not too far from where I went to college (Ithaca). Best wishes for your friend and all concerned.

All you guys who love cars would enjoy the link I listed at 12:19. If that address works. I still have no idea how to do the blue links. If the link doesn't work try googling Jeff Gordan Pepsimax test drive.

PK- if I can figure out how to link, so can you! On the write-up page, scroll down to "OLIO" on the right of the screen. Click on "Create Comment Link" and do exactly what it says to do, and you should be in business. LOVED your clip!!!

Yellowrocks,
Except 3, Chinese and Japanese differ greatly in those numeral pronunciation. But I don't speak Japanese, so I can't be sure.
